CULTURAL COMPETENCE

Cultural and Linguistic Competency (CLC), a guiding principle of our system of care philosophy and practiced by Project Connect, includes the "willingness and ability of a system to value the importance of culture in the delivery of services to all segments of the population served."
As our rural communities change and become more diverse, the need to respond to how culture affects the outcomes of services becomes more apparent. Race, ethnicity, beliefs, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, and practices are all a part of an individual's culture.
Culture must be considered when service providers strive to provide quality services. When services are provided in a culturally competent manner, one's culture has not only been considered, but used as a tool to help "customize" the way in which those services are provided and best treatment methods identified.
